A to Z of people skills – Judgement

June 26th, 2012

How many times have you seen a job ad, particularly for senior management roles, which asks for “good judgement” and what exactly does that mean to you? Most people in business talk about making logical decisions and then, just occasionally, someone mentions creative or lateral thinking. Judgement is about weighing up issues and their suggestions or solutions to make appropriate decisions. So, judgement is about decision-making.

The interesting aspect is that judgement is also associated with senior roles so is partly about relevant experience. Many senior-level decisions are made based on lots of logical reasons or evidence. Yet, they are simply the aggregation of a lots of reasons which the “most experienced” people have accumulated.

How, then, do you ensure less experienced people are able to improve their abilities to make decisions ie exercise judgement?
